The New Zealand Conservation Trust is a charitable organisation that was established in 1984 with HRH Princess Anne as Patron. The Trust's role is to maintain the animals within its care, fund raise for, and promote conservation and educational projects, while linking with other organisations within New Zealand.

The captive community continues to play an increasingly important role in ensuring the safety of our remaining precious NZ native species. Many of our members are involved in breeding-for-release programmes, thereby making a direct and important contribution to in-situ conservation. Some endangered NZ native species could not be saved from extinction without captive efforts. We cannot afford to let our remaining national treasures join the increasing list of species lost forever such as the bush wren, laughing owl, huia, moa – a list that is sadly very long. Our members strive together as an industry to achieve best practice captive management on world standards.

Willowbank Farm
This breeding centre is located away from Willowbank Wildlife Reserve where it provides facilities for establishing breeding programmes in a more relaxed and private environment. Some of the breeds are Karakul Sheep, Miniature Cattle, Miniature Horses, Miniature Donkeys, Black Cockatoos and Llamas.
Styx Mill Conservation Trust
The Styx River is one of several springfed river systems that originate and flow through the district of Christchurch, New Zealand. This catchment, located on the northern urban edge, is approximately 50 square kilometres.

The Rare Breeds Conservation Society of New Zealand was established in 1988 to provide a focus for the growing interest throughout the country in encouraging the genetic conservation of rare & unusual breeds of livestock.

BNZ Kiwi Recovery Programme
The Bank of New Zealand sponsors the kiwi recovery programme within New Zealand with Operation Nest Egg where kiwi eggs are taken from the wild, incubated at approved centres then released back into the wild once they reach a size that is able to survive predation.

Yates New Zealand is helping the kiwis at Willowbank Wildlife Reserve by donating Yates Hauraki Gold peat moss through out the breeding season for the brooder boxes of the newly hatched chicks. Last season the New Zealand Conservation Trust at Willowbank hatched 64 eggs and reared a further 14 chicks taken from the wild, so this donation is considerable and very welcome.
