Animal Academy Synopsis Animal Academy is the infotaining family television series for people passionate about animals, hosted by Olympic Gold Medallist Sarah Ulmer and Willowbank Wildlife Park Head Ranger Jeremy Maguire. New Zealand is a country of Animal Lovers. With nearly 800,000 dogs and 1.5 million felines, we have one of the highest pet ownership rates in the world. New Zealanders spend millions of dollars every year feeding and caring for their animals. Most people own an animal or two; they are considered part of the family bringing fun and joy to our lives. Each episode of Animal Academy brings together and reflects on New Zealand’s huge array of animal life. Vets and pets, tame and wild; from working with animals daily to rare encounters - Animal Academy has something for everyone. Animal Academy profiles New Zealand’s most extraordinary animal lovers. Bug man Brian Lawton keeps red backed spiders at home, Ohau has a dance class for dogs, Jonathon Smith sleeps with a 200 kilo wild boar, and Gay Silby breeds cats with no hair. Animal Academy celebrates New Zealanders’ passion for animals of all shapes and sizes. We pay tribute to those who dedicate their lives to working with animals. Bird Rescuer Dawne Morton works through the night to save hundreds of bird’s lives, Krista Johnson, owner of Barkley Manor runs and up market day care for dogs, and Michael Beaumont researches humane methods of controlling our 70,000,000 possum problem. Animal Academy takes you into a vet’s clinic and behind its surgery doors, guided by the deft hand of our resident vet Deborah Simpson. Watch as she delivers C-section puppies, performs a hip operation and removes a kitten’s paralysed leg, as well as the more ordinary procedures of dental checks, infections and spaying. We get up close and personal with Jeremy Maguire as he comes face to face with some of this country’s most exceptional animals. From a 110 year old Tuatara to a Sperm Whale, from hand feeding a stingray to sledding with Malamute dogs – we take you there. All this and more make Animal Academy an informative, entertaining and insightful series that uncovers the special relationship we have with man’s best friends – animals.
