Who We Are

About Willowbank

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve was created to bring people closer to New Zealand’s incredible wildlife. It’s all about giving visitors the chance to connect with animals in spaces that feel natural, immersive and alive.

We were the first in New Zealand to open a glass-free nocturnal kiwi house, so you can see kiwi behaving naturally, without barriers. It’s still one of the most special experiences here.

We play an active role in conservation. We care for endangered native species, breed and protect rare heritage animals, and work alongside partners like the Department of Conservation and the Styx River Living Laboratory to support wildlife recovery and habitat restoration. Every day, our team is hands-on in making a real difference for animals and nature.

Every visit helps build a stronger connection with wildlife and supports a future where people and animals can thrive together.

Our History

Willowbank was founded more than 50 years ago by the Willis family, and it’s still proudly family owned and operated today. What started as a small idea has grown into one of Christchurch’s most loved wildlife experiences, welcoming more than 120,000 visitors each year. While a lot has changed over the years, the heart of Willowbank hasn’t. The Willis family still plays an active role, with a strong focus on animal care, conservation, and creating a great experience for everyone who visits.
